Former Governor Jim Hunt
and North Carolina State Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement Steve
Jones used the NC TeleCenter conference room to discuss with local leaders a
plan to make Martin County home to the first N.C. State Industrial Extension
county office.
Hunt congratulated the
Martin County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) on the work they have
done to get the center from concept to reality, and discussed yet another
additional use for the diversified collection of training classrooms,
teleworking, and offices in the TeleCenter. Under the plan Hunt discussed,
the Industrial Extension office would be a pilot program to support start up
and growth of small businesses in the county.
The program would help
small companies improve quality standards and maximize profit through
streamlining and organization. The program will be supported with the help
of funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce, and matching funds from N.C.
State and the EDC.
“This would be the first
office of its kind in the state of North Carolina,” Hunt said. “This is
a golden opportunity. I’m amazed at what (the Martin County EDC) has done
and at what can be done,” added Hunt.
